There’s nothing more pleasing than the aroma of freshly baking granola. Imagine waking your kids up to this…I don’t think they’d complain! Use your imagination to mix up the flavors and ingredients so you never make the same granola twice.
Granola smells almost as good as Apple Pie while its cooking. This is a healthy and inexpensive alternative to store bought cereal. You will enjoy the versatility of making your own breakfast cereal. The flavor and ingredient combinations are all up to you. Make sure to use either pre-boiled nuts or only pinenuts if this is for a child 8 years and younger since their digestion isn't strong enough for other nuts yet.
For the Sauce
1 C Olive Oil or Corn Oil
1 C Date Sugar or 2/3 Cup Brown Sugar
1/2 C Butter
2 Tbsp Blackstrap Molasses
1 Tbsp Vanilla
1 1/3 C Honey
1 tsp Salt
For the Granola
10 C Rolled Oats or mixed Rolled Grains
1/2 C Sesame or Flax seeds or a blend
1 C Nuts, Chopped -- Pecan, Almond, Walnut, Pinenut, Macadamia etc. (only use pinenuts if this is for a child under the age of 8)
2 C Blend of Wheat Germ, Wheat Bran, Oat Bran, Rice Bran etc.
1 lb. Coconut
1 C Sunflower Seeds
1 or 2 C Raisins (don't add until the granola is finished cooking)
Warm the Oil, Butter and Sweeteners to melt all together.
Add remaining sauce ingredients and keep warm while mixing up the granola.
In a very large bowl mix together all the granola ingredients except the raisins.
Add the Warmed sauce and mix very thoroughly.
Pour into jelly roll pans or cookie sheets and spread evenly.
Bake at 250° for approx 1 hour depending on how thick the granola is on the sheets.
Stir every 10-15 minutes.
When golden, granola is finished.
Remove from pan before allowing to cool or you will fight to loosen it from the pan.
Cool and Store in an airtight container.
If this isn't going to be used immediately, store in the freezer for long term use.
Make sure you don't overcook this. Granola is very easy to burn. Keep an eye on the progress and stir often. If you can't keep an close eye on it, just turn down the oven temperature.
